Parkour training with the WFPF boys

I had the opportunity yesterday to train with some of the guys from WFPF at a local open gym event. It was quite inspiring indeed to watch these guys perform so effortlessly and fearlessly the same maneuvers many of us have practiced for so long to less impressive results. In any event, I came out with an invigorated spirit, and now ready to take my parkour training to the next level. Well, give it a day or two to get rid of this crazy soreness.  ;-)

Group photo! Can you find me?
With Ben Jenkin, Philip Doyle, and Michael Turner. Hey, I earned that moppy hair after a few hours of hard training.

Here is a sampling of videos from these pros:

Calisthenics Inspiration

For those who practice calisthenics, you have likely looked up in awe at the acrobats from internationally famous troupes such as Cirque Du Soleil. What makes them even more remarkable is the sheer amount of training they must partake in on a daily basis, let alone the actual nightly performances in front of hundreds if not thousands of spectators.

If they were to listen to the general principles of sets and reps preached in normal fitness circles, they would surely be overtraining. However, with calisthenics being a more natural training system involving only your own bodyweight, the human body can more easily adapt, greatly decreasing the possibility of injury.

Like many who are now strictly into calisthenics, I was once an avid weightlifter going through the normal trials and tribulations at the gym. Over the years, I sustained many minor aches and pains hoisting up those artificial, metallic, manmade creations. Things were going decently well, but I was looking for something more enjoyable, more effective, and above all, more fulfilling.

About five years ago, I started doing parkour, but still pumped the iron as my main source of strength training. It wasn't quite ready to forgo the gym completely.

However, one day, it all just clicked. After viewing countless parkour and calisthenics training videos over time, I had seen enough to make me a believer. I gave up going to my once beloved gym cold turkey, and as they say, ain't never turning back! It's also no coincidence that most of the nagging injuries have all gone by the wayside. I haven't picked up a single iron weight for quite some time now, and I plan to keep it that way for the foreseeable future.

Here is just a sampling of some amazing videos I have recently come across. Prepare to be mesmerized and inspired at the same time. Obviously, these are the big time professionals, and most of us would be happy to perform 1/10 of the tricks they do, but one can't help but be motivated by merely watching.

Put away the dumbbells. This is what real strength is all about.

Ido Portal makes it look so effortless. If you have a chance to attend one of his workshops, don't pass it up!

Willy Weldens is a famous acrobat from France, where he has his own show. If he ever comes Stateside, I'll be the first in line for tickets.

Alternative Circus is one of many amazing circus troupes from the Ukraine.

I have no idea who these guys are, or where they're from, but simply prepare to pick up your jaw after it drops to the floor.

Encho Keryazov, undoubtedly is one of the strongest pound for pound individuals on the planet. Then again, is he even human?

I had the pleasure of witnessing the Alexis Brothers in action as part of Mystère in Las Vegas. Needless to say, I was quite in awe. With this clip here, they are fittingly at the Arnold Classic bodybuilding show, letting everyone in attendance know what, REAL, functional muscle is supposed to look like!

Oh, and last but not least, this guy isn't too shabby! ;-)

Wow, all these videos are getting me pumped up. Now, if you'll excuse me, I'll be at the park if you need me.

4 minute increments at a time

I know that like many working people out there (myself included), you have a busy schedule, and can't always find a dedicated continuous block of time during the day to head to the gym, take a jog, go for a long walk, etc. You probably still want to exercise, but the daily grind just doesn't allow you much of an opportunity. What to do? Well, the answer is quite simple, and actually doesn't take up much of your time at all...

Break up your workout into 4 minute intervals spread throughout the day!

During these sessions, you will experience a very efficient workout that will improve your cardiovascular endurance and strength at the same time. This is based on the principles of the "Tabata Method," named after famed Japanese researcher, Dr. Izumi Tabata. Here is how it works.

20 seconds exercise as intensely as you can, with maximum speed / reps

10 seconds rest

Repeat until 4 minutes have elapsed. Simple as that. This totals 8 sets at 20 seconds apiece.

If you like, you can do all eight sets with the same exercise, but I prefer to mix things up in a more cross-training style. The types of exercises performed are strictly up to you - basically anything that will keep your heart rate up for the said amount of time - but should normally consist of compound movements that activate numerous muscle fibers. Since I promote strictly calisthenics, anything from push ups, pull ups, muscle ups, dips, burpees, squats, crunches, sprinting, jump roping, etc. will work well. If you are more advanced, you can add more difficult variations of these.

I usually recommend alternating between two exercises, performing four sets apiece. Typically, it is best to switch between opposing bodyparts (chest / back, chest / legs, etc.), as this allows a bit of rest time while the other muscles are working. Sometimes I also do three different exercises (3, 3, 2 sets) or four (2, 2, 2, 2), but for this, just make sure that you don't lose count. Heck, if you are feeling spontaneous, you can try something different with all eight of them. Just remember to keep up the intensity for every single set. Below is just a sample of the different combinations you can try:

Two exercises, alternating: E1, E2, E1, E2, E1, E2, E1, E2

Two exercises, one before other: E1, E1, E1, E1, E2, E2, E2, E2

Three exercises, alternating: E1, E2, E3, E1, E2, E3, E1, E2

Three exercises, one before other: E1, E1, E1, E2, E2, E2, E3, E3

So, how many and how often? The answer: Whenever you can find the time. Ideally, you should be able to muster four to five Tabata sessions stretched thoughout each day. Say you wake up in the morning, bang out two back to back before work, and you will have only spent a whopping eight minutes! Perhaps during your lunch break, before heading out to grab your soup and salad, you can find an empty space at your office to perform another one. Then, after work, before dinner, another one or two. If you have the time and energy, you can even attempt four Tabatas in a row, with a one minute break in between each.

Doesn't this sound much easier than having to drive to the gym after work, spending 30 minutes or even an hour slaving away on the treadmill and Precor machines? Total elapsed time per day, 16 to 20 mins. That's it! I know that even the busiest of people can certainly spare a measly four minutes at various times thoughout the day.

Have a nice workout, and let me be the first to wave goodbye to all that extra fat you will shed.

Blog entry archives

As promised, before getting the ball rolling on newer material, I thought I'd refresh everyone on some of my previous entries. Before starting this blog on Posterous, the majority of my thoughts were posted on the First Cut Fitness Facebook page, which will continue to be the main site, with this as a complementary. Instead of reposting them all individually, as I originally planned, I have decided to make things easier by simply including them all on one post. So, let's all revisit, shall we?

How to avoid the dreaded "food coma" at the office place.

The quickest and simplest way to eliminate what many people dread the most.

Do some people try to make you feel guilty for actually trying to improve your life? Don't let others bring you down. Simply leave them behind.

After a weekend of pillaging and plundering in the land of sin, how was I able to maintain my body composition with nary a hint of a scratch?

Is it possible food lover and keep up a lean, mean physique at the same time? Yes, and quite easily.

And there you have it! You can also see a quick blurb of all them on one page if you like. Thanks for reading, and I'll be back soon with fresh new material. Happy workouts to you!

Welcome to the revamped First Cut Fitness blog!

Hello there! Welcome to the First Cut Fitness blog. If you haven't done so already, please check out my main First Cut Fitness page and also the YouTube workout videos! In this blog, I will provide my insights on general health and wellness, as well as discuss different types of exercises and workouts best suited for life in the modern world.

I know we all have hectic lives in this urban jungle, and taking time out to go to the gym is not always an option. Well, fear not. The idea behind First Cut FItness is to instill in everyone the benefits of natural bodyweight training at home, the office, the local park, or basically any place you can find in the city landscape... anytime.

As the motto states, "Put the weights down. Lift yourself up." This basically means that there is no need to waste your time going to the gym using artificial metal plates and gadgets, when the best piece of equipment for exercise... is the very thing you are training. What can be more satisfying than mastering your own body for strength, health, and ultimately, appearance?

To kick things off with the blog, I'll be transferring over some old(er) blog entries from my main page from a few months back. Once everything is up to speed, it will be nothing but fresh new content for you to digest (and work off). I hope to see you again soon! As always, have a nice workout, and be safe!
